What is a Quick Divorce and is it Right for Me?

Let’s Clear This Up: Quick Doesn’t Mean Instant

No matter what you’ve seen online, there’s no such thing as an “instant” divorce in England and Wales. Legally, the fastest a divorce can be completed is around 32 weeks (just over 7 months).

Here’s what that timeline looks like:

✅ 2 weeks for the court to process your initial application
✅ 20-week reflection period (required by law)
✅ 4 weeks for the Conditional Order to be granted
✅ 6-week wait before the Final Order can be issued

This is the fastest the law allows — and it’s exactly what we help you achieve.

Why Most Divorces Take Much Longer

While 32 weeks is the legal minimum, the average divorce in the UK currently takes 63 weeks – that’s 15 months.

That’s usually due to:

✅ Delays in dealing with each stage
✅ Mistakes during the process
✅ Back-and-forth between expensive solicitors

How We’re Different

At Easy Online Divorce, we complete divorces in just over 7 months — twice as fast as the UK average — by removing the delays, confusion, and solicitor costs.

If you’re looking to get divorced as quickly as the law allows — you’re in the right place.

In fact, a top solicitor said to me once, “It isn’t in our interest to resolve everything in one email.”

Fortunately, most people only go through No-Fault Divorce once. The downside to this is that you don’t know what to expect. If this is you, think back to when you bought a house. Can I get a No-Fault Divorce if my spouse disagrees?

Yes, you can still apply for a No-Fault Divorce if your spouse disagrees, but the process might be more complicated and lengthy. Since the introduction of the No-Fault Divorce in April 2022, your ex no longer has any legal basis to defend against or stop the No-Fault Divorce except for one technicality.

The technicality is about jurisdiction. If your ex can prove that the English courts don’t have justification, they could stop the No-Fault Divorce in England and Wales. However, if you or your spouse live full-time in England or Wales and consider it your home, you can No-Fault Divorce in the English courts.

But just because your ex can’t legally stop the No-Fault Divorce doesn’t mean they can’t make it difficult. Once the court has reviewed an application for No-Fault Divorce, they will issue the No-Fault Divorce petition to your spouse and an acknowledgement of service form to return. Your ex must respond to the acknowledgement of service for the No-Fault Divorce to proceed.

There are a few ways to deal with this; however, all of them will delay your No-Fault Divorce significantly, so it is always best to speak to your ex and try to reach an agreement about getting a No-Fault Divorce.

In a no-fault divorce, Courts in England and Wales decide how to divide money, property, pensions, and maintenance. One of the main things they look at is what each person earns, owns, or is likely to have in the future.

For longer marriages (usually five years or more), the court often sees a 50/50 split of assets as fair, especially if the assets were built up during the marriage. In shorter marriages, the court may focus more on who contributed what financially. The court also looks at past cases to help guide its decisions.
